Eu desejo apresentar-vos esta esplêndida colecção de peças de Shakesperius. Passei muitas horas maravilhosas a ouvir esta colecção fantástica. Não acho que seja necessário dar uma descrição ou uma sinopse das peças. Aqueles que leram as peças, devem estar familiarizados com o trabalho. Ou olha os escaneos. ;-)

A colecção que aqui se encontra foi primeiramente carregada pelo Avax em 12-2007. Eu vi-a dois meses após o seu post inicial, e pensei disponibilizá-la em «Macaco», é dizer em compressão sem perda de dados. Espero que todos apreciem esta publicação. Vou evitar ligaçãos e palavras-chave. Por favor não escrevam ligações nem palavras-chave nos vossos comentários, em baixo.

Fiz este trabalho para os admiradores da literatura inglesa na comunidade. Podem descarregar dos seus trabalhos em pdf aqui, pulse. Agradecimentos ao andreydh pela carregada. Apreciem a literatura!

Je souhaite vous presenter cette extraordinaire, collection de pièces de Shakesperius. J’ai passé beaucoup d’heures merveilleusement écoutant cette admirable collection. Je ne sais pas si cela était nécessaire de vous donner une description ou une synopsis des oeuvres. Ceux qui lisent les pièces doivent etre familiarises.

La collection qui se presente ici a eté téléchargée dans un premier moment par Avax le 12–2007. J'ai vu deux mois aprés son post inicial et j’ai pensé la disponibiliser en «grand singe», c’est-à-dire, avec une compression sans perte de données. Je espere que tous se rejouissent cette publication. J’ai évité des liens et mots-clé. N’écrivez pas des liens ni mots-clé dans votre commentaires ci-dessous s’il vous plait.

pThe Classic FM Gramophone Awards - often referred to as "the Oscars of the classical music world" - continue to grow in stature and significance, and for 2007 Gramophone has announced a change in the awards process.

From the hundreds of recordings released between June 1 and May 31 the music industry is asked to nominate the discs it wishes to be considered for each Award. This long list is then voted on by panels of specialist critics to produce a short list of six discs per category (these are: Early Music, Baroque Vocal, Baroque Instrumental, Chamber, Choral, Concerto, Contemporary, DVD, Historic reissue, Historic archive, Instrumental, Opera, Orchestral, Recital and Vocal).

At the round two stage, Gramophone critics are asked to reduce these six to one winner in each category. The resulting discs will each receive a Classic FM Gramophone Award (this returns to the original method of making the awards).

Another round which takes into account the voting in the First Round as well as soliciting votes from a smaller panel of critics produces the Record of the Year.

At the Awards ceremony the following awards are presented.

Special Achievement
An Innovation Award (in association with Classic FM magazine)

The Gramophone Award Winners 1977-2007

Collecting the Albums - During the proccess of collecting these recordings, I've noticed that a few of the original award winning records are no longer easily available. In such cases they have therefore been replaced with a newer release which of course features the very same recording as the original. Same same but different you know. All in all I have collected the albums and their scans from various sources. Most has been ripped and scanned by myself, some has been downloaded getting the music from somewhere and the scans from somewhere else. In other words, one big mix of material forming a great collection.

Available Scans - You'll find that you have the option to download the available scans separately. The links for the scans are found in the same text file as the links for the music itself. You will figure it out I'm sure. If you have better scans than the ones included here, you are strongly urged to upload those and share them with the AvaxHome community. This is particularly necessary with the 1978, 1982 and 1985 award winners.

Reporting Errors - Should you surprisingly find any kind of flaws, errors, typos or anything else about this project that is not amazingly accurate, sublimely beautiful or otherwise close to perfect, please let me know about it. Any kind of feedback is higly appreciated as long as it is kept in a friendly and patient tone of course.

Creating Mirrors - If any of you feel a strong need to create mirrors for the albums in this project I will have to ask you only to do so on filehosts other than Rapidshare and not to present the links to such mirrors in a comment but rather send them to me in a personal message. Chi è cresciuto con piccole gemme come "Alla fiera dell'est", "La pulce d'acqua" e "Cogli la prima mela", non avrà comunque stentato a riconoscere la stessa mano del musicista nelle più recenti "Il dito e la luna", "Domenica e lunedì" o "I santi". Segno di una rotta musicale stabile, tenuta a bordo di una nave che con il passare dei porti e dei mari si è arricchita di altri sapori e spezie, senza mai perdere l'identità della sua provenienza. È per questo che Branduardi continua ad essere tra i musicisti più seguiti? A very different set than Teldec's Bach 2000. The Hanssler Bachakademie, supervised by Helmut Rilling, is not HIP (historic instruments performance). The orchestras are warm and lush (but not huge). The soloists are, in general, extraordinary. The tempos are sane. Hanssler has included fragments of some incomplete BWV's that are not included in the Teldec set; a minor plus but appealing. I found I preferred these traditional instruments and the daring using of forte-piano in place of harpsichord on a few of the recordings (flute sonatas). Highlights for me are The Well-Tempered Clavier Books 1 and 2, Musical Offering, Flute Sonatas, The Motets. I also found I prefer these Cantatas recordings to any other, including the new Koopman, Suzuki and the well-known Leonhart-Harnoncourt. While not the newest recordings, the sound is warmer which I prefer to the new state-of-the-art HIP recordings. Although most of the Cantatas are older recordings, much of the Hanssler Bachakademie edition is newly recorded for this project and the sound is consistent and excellent.

Despite early exposure with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, and Kenny Dorham (see OJCCD- 113-2), Jimmy Heath had to wait until he was nearly 33 to make his own recording debut as a leader. The Thumper is that debut; and it reveals both a tenor saxophonist of the unashamedly emotional Philadelphia school (like his hometown friends John Coltrane and Benny Golson) and a composer/arranger who invariably fashions fresh melodic and ensemble creations. With brother Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums and four other all-stars, Jimmy performs a program of five originals (including the classic "For Minors Only") and four complementary pieces that set the pattern for subsequent Riverside albums and the inspired music he continued to create in the Nineties.

A definite thumper from the young Jimmy Heath -- proof that he was always one of the hippest cats in his scene, even at the start! The record's ostensibly a blowing session with a handful of like-minded hardboppers from the late 50s -- but as usual for Heath, the overall sound is something deeper in the end -- way more than just some simple solo moments over straight rhythms, and instead a record that really takes off with a well-arranged sense of energy! Even at this early date, Jimmy's showing a great talent for putting a group together -- and he works the sextet with an feeling that hints strongly at soul jazz modes to emerge in the 60s -- especially the deeper-toned styles of some of the groups in which Heath would work as a sideman later on in the decade. Players here include Nat Adderley on cornet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums -- but 2 of the album's tracks feature Jimmy alone with the rhythm section.

Born in Toronto, Hill is an unabashedly sentimental singer/songwriter. As a teenager, Hill was a major fan of vocalists like Frank Sinatra. He became popular in Canada, and his debut album was released in 1975. In 1977, he co-wrote the highly emotional "Sometimes When We Touch" with Barry Mann, and it became a Top Ten smash in the U.S. After a few lesser hits, he seemingly disappeared, but mounted a comeback in 1987, scoring another Top Ten hit with "Can't We Try," a duet with Vonda Sheppard. He has charted a few times on Billboard's adult contemporary chart since then.

This justifiably famous 1964 concert by Miles Davis' quintet at the Lincoln Center has been released in many incarnations. Originally it appeared as two single LPs, one consisting of the ballads of the evening, the other including all of the burners; it has also been released as part of last year's seven-CD set Seven Steps, and as a double-CD set that restored the concert to the order of its original program.

I have always preferred to separation into “hot” and “cool,” as it keeps each recording in a consistent mood. This one, the ballads, is chock-full of cherished moments. Miles' opening solo on “My Funny Valentine” essentially recast his role as the darling of the hip elite, and it's easy to hear why. With sensitivity and delicacy, he draws you in by his whisper of a tone, making the piece all the more lyrical and pleading. Ditto for “I Thought About You,” which has the trumpeter sounding reflective and lonely one moment, obtrusive the next.

As a transitional figure in this band, George Coleman gives the performance of his life, with robust solos full of gently swinging, yet slightly abstract ideas on the toe-tapping “All of You” and the midtempo “All Blues.” With the rhythm section of soon-to-be superstars Ron Carter (bass), Herbie Hancock (piano), and 19-year-old Tony Williams (drums), Coleman is pushed, pulled, and tugged through each song. As with so many of Davis' bands, this incarnation was not to last very long. Miles was looking for something else, and he would find it in Coleman's replacement, Wayne Shorter. But that should not be cause to dismiss the importance of this band or this recording.

"There's a sinister tenderness to this L.A. trio's sad, soft, gorgeous folk. Comprised of Abigail and Lily Chapin (daughters of children's music notable Tom Chapin, nieces of 70's legend, Harry Chapin) and Jessica Craven (daughter of horror director, Wes Craven, stepdaughter of Tom), the Chapin Sisters use eerie harmonies to great effect in their meditations on love lost and losing.

The Chapin Sisters, are three actual sisters who live and play music in Los Angeles. Though the band started officially only two years ago, the Chapin Sisters have been singing together forever. The Chapin Sisters harmonize with such lush and entrancingly beautiful three-part harmonies that it's easy to overlook their dark side.

Upon hearing the first notes of one of their shows or recordings, it becomes obvious that the Chapins have the sort of tight, celestial harmony that only sisters can achieve. Lake Bottom LP, the full length debut from The Chapin Sisters, was recorded in the Summer of 2007. On the recording and in person, they wed lilting voices, dynamically complex vocal harmonies, and folk-influenced melodies to dark, wryly sarcastic lyrical content. Their words express heartbreak, love lost and disillusionment from different and unique angles, while their singing expresses an exultant celebration of life. The arrangements are sparse yet rich, showcasing the sisters' sophisticated vocal harmonies supported by Abigail and Lily's subtle acoustic guitars and the occasional accent of bass, percussion, electric violin and singing saw.

Jackie Greene - Giving Up The Ghost (2008)

It's possible, but hardly common, for a singer-songwriter to sound echoes of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Gram Parsons, Elvis Costello and Paul Westerberg, all of which Jackie Greene does on his fifth album.

In "Uphill Mountain" alone, he references colorfully named characters such as Peeping Tom and Madame Rose, name-checks Elmore James and John Henry and tosses off such bons mots as "You got to take just what you are given/'Cause luck only matters with the cards and the women," staking his claim as a peer, not a shadow. The San Francisco-based musician opens the album advising the listener, "California is the place to be, but I should warn you about the things I've seen." He proceeds to reel off one fascinating, detail-rich tale or morality play after another. Somehow, as literate as his lyrics can read, they never sound academic, rarely self-conscious: "I don't pretend to make the world feel better / I don't live on the moon," he sings in "I Don't Live in a Dream." No brag, just fact.

He's a skilled multi-instrumentalist and has been a virtual one-man band on previous albums, but this time he's assembled a crack team of Americana/roots music specialists to support him. With four distinctive albums under his belt, Giving Up The Ghost is an energetic showcase of folk, blues and rock that Greene has taken to another level. Olivia Byington is a praised and awarded Brazilian singer who has worked with such artists as Tom Jobim, Silvio Rodriguez, Djavan, Clara Sverner, Wagner Tiso, Chico Buarque, Turibio Santos, Radames Gnattali, Joao Carlos Assis Brasil, Paulo Moura, and Egberto Gismonti. Her expressive discography includes A Dama do Encantado, where she sings the repertory of Aracy de Ameida, one of the best interpreters of Noel Rosa's creations. She studied piano, violin, and classical guitar in her childhood. In 1977 she formed the group Antena Coletiva with Jacques Morelenbaum. She recorded her first album in the next year, Corra O Risco (Continental). In 1979, Byington was appointed the best vocalist of the '70s by critics. She became well known by performing alongside A Barca do Sol; later she wasinvited to work with Tom Jobim, Wagner Tiso, Chico Buarque, Turibio Santos, Radames Gnattali, Joao Carlos Assis Brasil, Paulo Moura, and Egberto Gismonti. In 1981 she was invited to perform in Cuba by Chico Buarque. Byington recorded her third album (Identidad) on the isle the next year, invited by Silvio Rodriguez. In 1983 she recorded the soundtrack for the film Para Viver um Grande Amor with Djavan and Tom Jobim. In the next year, together with Paulo Moura, Clara Sverner, and Turibio Santos, she recorded Encontro (Kuarup), winning the Chiquinha Gonzaga trophy. In 1990 she toured Brazil together with Joao Carlos Assis Brasil. Byington continued to perform and record regularly in solo or in meetings with renowned artists, touring Portugal and Italy in 1995.

Superficially, Madness seemed to be a lightweight pop group who had a lot of fun, but some of their songs had a lot of depth. I've seen them compared to the Kinks - both groups having (in their different eras) offered interesting insights into London life. This is high praise indeed so although I wouldn't quite put Madness on the same level as the Kinks, their music has far more to offer than you might think. Between 1979 and 1983, Madness had fifteen UK top ten hits and two UK top twenty hits. Taking their group name from a Prince Buster song, their first hit (The Prince) was a tribute to him and their second hit (One step beyond) was a cover of one of Prince Buster's songs. They later had another cover hit with It must be love (Labi Siffre) but wrote most of their own material. Their biggest UK hits were House of fun (UK number one) and Wings of a dove (UK number two - an original song, not a cover of the old gospel standard), but they also made the UK top five with My girl, Baggy trousers, Embarrassment, Grey day, It must be love, Driving in my car, Our house and The sun and the rain. After one of their members quit in 1983, the hits generally became smaller although Madness continued to make great music. They disbanded in 1986 but have re-formed intermittently since then. One such reunion (with the original line-up) recorded a new album in 1999, which yielded the UK top ten hit Lovestruck and another great song, Johnny the horse, both featured here.

Настоящее имя музыканта Евгений Рудин. Он начал свою карьеру в 1990 году в Санкт-Петербурге в первой техно-группе в России , затем организовывал свой проект . Он стал первым DJ-резидентом танцевального клуба <Тоннель>. В 1995 выпустил альбом ремиксов группы <Мальчишник>. А чуть позже Рудину предложили место программного директора первого в России танцевального радио <Станция 106.8>. В 1996 Грув создал композицию "Счастье есть", которая была записана совместно с М.С. Горбачевым и Р.М. Горбачевой. С того момента Рудин переключился на ремиксы для российских поп-артистов. В 1999 у Грува вышел альбом ремиксов "Ди-джей Грув и все, все, все!", в котором были собраны лучшие работы с отечественными исполнителями. В этом же году он получил национальную премию "Овация" за достижения в молодежной культуре, сделал ремиксы для зарубежных звезд: "Depeche Mode", "Cardigans", "Vacuum". В 2000 Грув открыл свой звукозаписывающий лейбл <Грувзапись>, затем отправился в тур по Германии, по возвращении из которого решил вновь заняться творчеством. Сегодня у Евгения Рудина своя школа DJ.

Fred Eaglesmith is a Canadian singer / songwriter / storyteller / comedian who reads books on nano-technology, likes machinery, and runs his farm entirely on wind and solar energy. And his band has their quirks, too.
For the past decade, Fred and his free-spirited troop of modern-day troubadours have worn a zig-zag trail across North America, with trips to Europe and Australia recently added to their quixotic adventures. The miles winding away through the night beneath the wheels of their battered bus bear the mark of their passing. In their rearview mirror are scenes of rabid Fredheads whooping and whistling for the raw, driving country soul scorching the stage. Audiences laughing until their sides ache at the hilarious personal tales Fred weaves into his show. Newly converted fans stunned into silence as the balladeer shares poignant tales of aching loss — or grinning at his tongue-in-cheek take on the human condition.

Fred Eaglesmith is unstuck in time. His stage show hearkens back to an earlier era of country and roots music when entertainers would spin tales and spout one-liners between tightly crafted tunes. Yet Fred’s songs — and his stories — are carved from keen observations of the modern world and how it affects Everyman. Across the continent, a growing number of Fredheads surge into roadhouses, honky tonks, old churches and high-ticket theaters to revel in the experience that is a Fred Eaglesmith concert. Fred has broken all the rules on his way to becoming a Juno award-winning and critically acclaimed artist. He has done so consciously, purposely, and fully aware of the price tag attached.

"We’re out of the music business now," he says. "We don’t want to win any awards, I don’t want a publicist, we don’t need critics reviewing the music. I went into a record store the other day, and my CDs weren’t in there. And I was glad." Fred doesn’t have a repertoire of radio hits. What he does have is better. On any given night, from Ontario to Texas, he could perform entire sets from requests for his original tunes called out by the audience. "I've never had to compromise — not that I would," Fred says. "My fans recognize the integrity in the music, and they would detect any crack in the wall and call me on it."

Fred was raised on a series of farms in southern Ontario by an extremely religious father. He recalls his childhood as being in one of two places, either working the farm or driving to church. His father lost the farm, and by age sixteen Fred had left home, hopped freight trains out west and made his way back east to the farms of Ontario. After pursuing music in his younger years, Fred settled down and started a business that flourished beyond his dreams. Then the bottom fell out, and Fred went back to music to pay the mortgage. He landed a publishing deal in Nashville with Bluewater Music and returned with enough to catch up the payments on his farm. Then he hit the road. And the road has never been the same since. He owns his own CDs and has started a new record company — AML, A Major Label — not only for his own music but to give a leg up to talented young artists.

When he’s not writing songs (which he does every day), Fred’s active mind is constantly coming up with new concert ideas and new merchandise ideas, building his thriving business to the level of success that suits him. Fred has had 30 or 40 cuts by minor artists, plus major cuts by The Cowboy Junkies, Chris Knight, Dar Williams, Kasey Chambers and James King. Film director Martin Scorsese has used his songs, as have various others including James Caan in his movie Viva Los Nowhere. At the core of all this activity is a quiet truth that Fred keeps front and center in his mind. It’s all about the fans. He connects with them, on stage and off. It’s a connection that rings with honesty.

It's hard to imagine a CD that more succinctly sums up the complex rhythms and cross-cultural references of contemporary Brazilian music than Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions, but Tributo comes close. Confessions, the one solo record Suba released before his untimely passing in 1999, confirmed the musician as one of global groove's leading lights after a production career that included work on Bebel Gilberto's hugely successful Tanto Tempo. Tributo is a testament to Suba's original vision, a remarkably cohesive collection of live tracks, remixes, and newly recorded interpretations of his urbane, percussion-driven signature sound. Every track here smolders and burns with passion and fire, from collaborations with vocalists Cibelle Cavalli and Kaita B to new tracks from Boyz of Brazil and house producer Phil Asher, and remarkable remixes by Zero dB and Bigga Bush. In his lifetime, Suba tapped into and reprojected the teeming, throbbing street sounds of Sao Paulo, one of the world's largest and most densely populated cities. Even in death, his music plays on.

"Remember when the days were long and rolled beneath a deep blue sky" ... remember Paradise Lost and the Last Resort? At the end of the 1980s, his awareness of society and what's wrong with it more acute than ever, on his third solo album Don Henley took up the theme of the closing song of the Eagles' classic "Hotel California" even more forcefully than on his two prior releases. Now, however, it was not just "somebody" any longer who "laid the mountains low while the town got high." Now the enemy had a face; he was "the tired old man that we elected king;" that cowboy whose name was Jingo, and who "heard that there was trouble, so in a blaze of glory he rode out of the west - nobody was ever certain what it was that he was sayin' but they loved it when he told them they were better than the rest." ("Little Tin God.")

By the time he published "The End of the Innocence," Don Henley's name was as firmly established as that of a successful solo artist as it had previously come to be known as one of the driving forces behind the Eagles' almost decade-long success. Commercially his most successful album and critically his most acclaimed, his third solo release garnered a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocalist (for the title track) and produced several more hit singles besides "The End of the Innocence:" "The Heart of the Matter," "New York Minute," "How Bad Do You Want It?" and "Last Worthless Evening." Stylistically, the album ranges from ballads like the piano-driven title song (co-written by Bruce Hornsby, whose fingerprints are all over its instrumentation; not just in the keyboards but also in the saxophone solo, performed by Wayne Shorter, and in the song's main theme), "The Last Worthless Evening," and Don Henley's variation on the theme of forgiveness, "The Heart of the Matter" (a song that took him "42 years to write," as he explained during the opening show of the Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" tour) - all the way to hard-rocking tunes like "I Will Not Go Quietly," featuring background vocals by Axl Rose. In between are the jazzy, introspective "New York Minute," yet another (percussion- and rhythm-driven) warning that the world "ain't no Shangri-La," the deceptively light-footed "Little Tin God," and no less than three hard, edgy songs rounding up Henley's damning verdict on Reaganomics ("How Bad Do You Want It?," "Gimme What You Got" and "If Dirt Were Dollars").

As were his previous solo albums, "The End of the Innocence" was co-produced and largely co-written by Danny Kortchmar, and likewise as on the previous albums, Henley enlisted the cooperation of a number of other outstanding musicians - in addition to Kortchmar, Hornsby, Shorter and Rose, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Julia and Maxine Waters, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Stan Lynch, Toto's David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, "inofficial Eagle" J.D. Souther, and many others. Except for his greatest hits album, 1995's "Actual Miles," this was also to be the last record Don Henley would publish on Geffen; a label he did not leave without a fight (which alongside the Eagles' reunion, his marriage and his preoccupation with the Walden Woods Project, he would later list as one of the reasons why he did not produce another new album in all of eleven years).

Henley is well-known to be a perfectionist and is sometimes criticized for allegedly overly "slick" productions; a statement usually going hand in hand with accusations of superficiality and occasionally even hypocrisy (his records did, after all, earn him millions; so how serious can he be about his social criticism?). But it doesn't even take a look at his efforts to preserve the environment (in the Walden Woods Project and elsewhere), his recently formed coalition for artists' rights, and his testimony before Congress on a variety of related topics to doubt the accuracy of that assessment. This guy means every word he writes; just listen to his lyrics - and as long as "we got the bully pulpit and the poisoned pen" and "this brave new world [is] gone bad again" ("If Dirt Were Dollars [we'd all be in the black]"), he'll be around to hold up a mirror before our eyes.

One of the things you inevitably end up coming to terms with if you're both a rock music fan and an audiophile is that many of the albums you purchase will sound bad. The unfortunate side effect of the close look into a recording your high-resolution system gives you is that errors in production or mastering are thrown right in your face. One of the major schisms that divides my rock music collection is whether a particular CD is suitable for playing on my big home system. Many aren't. For the last few years, the popular solo discs from Don Henley have been banished to my second system: the car stereo. I reach for them when I'm about to hit the road, never when I'm about to sit down on the couch. After seeing how Mobile Fidelity polished up Building the Perfect Beast last year, I couldn't resist trying out their new release of The End of the Innocence.

Starting off with the title track, we find reasonably good sound quality on the original CD, but the piano sounds a bit fake. What's the point of having Bruce Hornsby stop by to play on your album if you're going to make him sound bad? The remastered version really revives the sound of the piano, while taking a bit of unpleasant emphasis off of Henley's vocals. The deep bass is firmed up a touch as well. "How Bad Do You Want It?" asks the second song. Bad enough to spend bigger bucks on a gold CD? If you like this track, that's quite a good idea. The 1989 release features really harsh and grating sound throughout. MoFi's version is considerably smoother, while still having better resolution of detail and slightly tighter bass.

On the old silver CD, "The Last Worthless Evening" opens with a clear acoustic guitar and continues with sound eliciting few complaints. The occasional cymbal crash does sound a bit muffled, though. The newer version restores realism to the drums all around, including a bit more body to the kick on the lower frequency percussion. The guitar is quite a bit more alive, and again there's a welcome bit of smoothing all around.

Even though minutes in New York are the same length as anywhere else (I've checked), "New York Minute" still manages to tell an involving story. The sound quality on this track is probably the best overall. But I noted a bit of compression on the louder parts of the song, where instruments and vocals sound a bit clipped. The remastered version still sounds a little bit limited in that regard, but it's much better. This is particularly impressive when you note that the average volume level of the gold CD is at least 1dB higher. The sense of a physical recording space is broadened, and there's a sharpening of the cymbal hits. You can't help but like the considerable extra power present in the bass guitar notes as well.

"Little Tin God" has always been one of my favorite Henley tracks, despite the fact that I'm normally less impressed with his songs when they're filled with political commentary. I can't help but wonder what rides would be like at the "Six Flags over Jesus" theme park. The upbeat music is hampered a bit by a somewhat flat presentation. The even more enjoyable remastered version presents a wider soundstage, and the guitar solo is really brought forward into your listening room. Instead of drums that are a bit toy-like, there's a realistic edge. And having a bit of extra thump in the bottom end doesn't hurt either.

After comparing the full set of tracks on The End of the Innocence, I find that there's a common pattern that appears. The songs obviously intended for release as singles, like "New York Minute" or "Heart of the Matter," sound much better than those destined for lesser fame. While some of this is inevitably due to more intense production work, the fact that this quality gap narrows considerably on the new version points toward mastering as a major factor. This makes perfect sense. The mastering engineers at Geffen, like those at any large record label, are under considerable pressure. If something is going to be skimped on and not optimized fully, you can bet it's the music predicted to be less popular. Because they release a comparatively small number of discs, Mobile Fidelity can dedicate weeks to a mastering job. The industry standard for this kind of work at a bigger company is at most a couple of days.

When I drag the gold CD of End of the Innocence along into my car, the differences are subtle, except when it comes time to try and put the disc back in the lift-lock jewel box (a dangerous process at highway speeds). It's only when I unleash the CD on more serious equipment that I really appreciate how improved things are sonically. When I spin the audiophile hype wheel for this one, I get back "like a veil was removed" as an accurate description of the upgrade. Thanks to Mobile Fidelity, Don Henley has now made his way back into regular home listening again, and I'm quite pleased with the transition.

After years of session work and songwriting for other people, Reginald Dwight changed his name to Elton John and formed a songwriting partnership with a certain Bernie Taupin (Elton wrote the music to Taupin's lyrics). After the release of two studio albums, they hit pay dirt with the release of this, their third album, and their first hit single `Your Song', taken from the previous self titled album.

Surprisingly there were no singles taken from this collection, taking Elton John on a wonderous journey into superstardom that was to spiral out of control. But for now the next 4 studio albums `Madman Across The Water', `Honky Chateau', `Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano Player', and the `Double Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' were all landmark albums in the world of rock. Unfortunately by the time of Elton's 9th Studio album `Captain Fantastic', and the `Dirt Brown Cowboys', it had all gone terribly wrong with massive egos taking over, all band members being fired and the partnership with Bernie Taupin terminated. The live shows were still great, but Elton's album output throughout the eighties and nineties was tedious at best, consisting mainly of Sub-Chicago plod-rock, before a welcome return to form last year with `Songs from the West Coast', which, not surprisingly, co-incided with him reuniting with Bernie Taupin and his old band mates, Nigel Olsson and Davy Johnstone.

But, back in 1970 with `Tumbleweed Connection', this was the first time a road band as such had been used in the studio, making it more the Elton John band rather than just Elton on his own. Nigel Olson had been offered the drum stool whilst in Brit Heavy Rockers Uriah Heep but, seeing the potential, made the job his own. He was joined by the amazing Dee Murray on bass, and the job that would soon be filled by Davey Johnstone was done by Caleb Quaye of label mates Hookfoot for these sessions.

It really was a case of everything was in position for world domination.

The album opens up with the blues rock of `Ballad of a well-known Gun', the story of a gunslinger reaching the end of the road. From there on out you are taken on a wonderful musical journey through the album's original ten songs, with a recurring wild west of America theme.

At all times the musicianship and songwriting is faultless, with Elton putting every ounce of emotion into Bernie's lyrics. The production by Gus Dudgeon was to set standards for years to come, and Paul Buckmaster's arrangements of the musical scores, both with band and strings, is nothing short of perfection, whether on epics like `Burn Down The Mission' (an amazing live version, which was laid down with just piano, bass, and drums on the band's live album 17.11.70, where you can actually hear Elton kick his piano stool away in the excitement), or on the tender `Love Song'. This only song on the album, not written by John/Taupin, is a beautiful Lesley Duncan song, which Lesley also sings on this version. But it is when Elton sits at the piano alone to regale us with `Talking Old Soldiers' that his talent really stands out. This story of an old warrior looking back on his youth whilst addressing a group of youngsters, is a shot straight at the heart.

In the metal community, there are two veteran/legendary bands that, whenever they release a new album, you know pretty much what you're going to get. We're talkin' about AC/DC and Motörhead, of course. While the former band now takes several years between albums, the latter cranks them out on a much more frequent basis, as evidenced by the arrival of 2006's Kiss of Death (which arrived barely over two years since 2004's Inferno). The fact that the hard-living group is still at it is an astonishing feat unto itself, but when you realize they're still keeping pace with the younger acts -- when it comes to touring and recording -- it's even more impressive. As expected, Kiss of Death contains quite a few new numbers that will sound right at home in the set list, nuzzled between "Ace of Spades" and "Overkill", including the album-opening "Sucker", as well as "One Night Stand" and "Christine". And following in the footsteps of the surprise acoustic ditty on their previous album, "Whorehouse Blues", comes another similarly styled track, "God Was Never on Your Side". Yet, overall, there are too many songs that sound like run-of-the-mill modern-day metal (such as "Living in the Past" and "Sword of Glory"), rather than the classic Motörhead sound you'd expect. Still, a mostly good Motörhead album like Kiss of Death easily manages to slay most of the fly-by-night foolers that are currently being showcased on the airwaves.

I got this one off of dailymotion some time back, as a 270 MB flash video, probably ripped from a VHS of the original broadcast. Although some parts have appeared at youtube by now as well, this full one seems to be gone for some time now, so that'll make a good excuse for dropping it here. Low quality, low fps, monaural .flv, and even out of sync a second or so, so what to do?
I tried various scenarios. In the end, I decided to stream the container content to avi, convert the video to 640x480 xvid, rip the mono audio, edit it in Audition as a wave (on dynamics and stereo channel mixing), and then join the new a/v in Premiere, this time in sync, and make a xvid/ac3 out of it, mostly because both xvid and ac3 have excellent rendition options through ffdshow: just fine-tune or adjust it the way you like it, even if it's a low quality vid. To be on the safe side, I'll post the original .flv alongside the edited .avi. You may want to check 'em out both.
As far as the performance is concerned: absolutely fascinating, great line up. The fact that the German audience doesn't seem to be very responsive to Waits' lyrics (probably due to language problems) just gives it all an extra edge.
Anyway, I hope you'll all appreciate the effort and enjoy this one. And remember: 'for fans by fans, and never for sale'.

Avant-garde tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp created a stir in 1977 when he recorded a set of hymns and folk melodies in melodic duets with pianist Horace Parlan. On February 6, 1980, he reunited with Parlan for a set of blues associated with Bessie Smith, and the following day, as a sort of sequel, Shepp played eight songs associated with Charlie Parker in collaboration with bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Although never a bebopper, Shepp does surprisingly well on such tunes as "Moose the Mooche," "Ornithology," "Yardbird Suite" and "Confirmation," even if he makes the mistake of doubling on his erratic soprano during a few numbers. Archie Shepp pays tribute to Bird not by copying him, but by being creative and playing Parker's repertoire in his own sound. Recommended.

Reviewer:
Stop and take a closer look at this album! This is one of the obscure gems of jazz. Featuring songs associated with Charlie Parker, Archie Shepp on saxophone and Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson on bass explore the legacy of the great bebop master. The instrumentation may seem odd and you may pass on this because it's just saxophone and bass. Instead without drums or piano, the songs have a spaciousness not usually found in the complex harmonies and elaborate melodies of bebop. If you know Archie Shepp, you know that he is not someone you would expect to reflect on Charlie Parker's style and sound. Shepp typically plays in an unpolished, crude style. He appears to choose this for an emotionally direct approach to the music and his improvisation. Pedersen, on the other hand, is the opposite. HIs style is clear and virtuosic and the contrast between these two musicians is positively enlightening!
For the most part, each tune is a straightforward statement of the melody followed by some jamming by this duo. Shepp switches between tenor and soprano, never touching Parker's alto. Shepp wanders in and out of key (as well as tune!), but always with great taste and sense. He never comes near the bop sensibility, but he doesn't have to, this is honest, brilliant stuff. Pedersen is the perfect alter ego for this style. He is immaculately clear, alternating between walking bass lines and overtone chords. The sax plays outside the rhythms while the bass is a real metronome.

Of the thousands of recordings I have, this one is one of the desert island choices. Don't hesitate, you won't be sorry buying this.

К непосредственному составу 'Аквариума' добавились духовая секция, струнный квартет, частью которого был штатный скрипач 'Аквариума' Андрей Суротдинов, а также баян и исполнители, играющие на рюмках и стеклянных колбах. Начав с 'Сидя на красивом холме', группа примерно час играла песни с последних двух альбомов 'Сестра хаос' и 'Песни рыбака', изредка перемежая их со старыми и любимыми хитами. Выглядело это так: 'Брод', 'Брат Никотин', 'Я змея', 'Северный цвет', 'Феечка', 'Человек из Кемерова', 'Послезавтра', 'Туман над Янцзы', 'Краковяк'. После нежной виртуальной песни про любовь к USB начались обещанные сюрпризы. Под аккомпанемент то баяна и дудочки Олега Сакмарова, то скрипки Суротдинова Гребенщиков исполнил 'Последний поворот', 'Голубой огонек', 'Кони беспредела', 'Дубровского' и 'Не пей вина, Гертруда'. Зрители, тихо мечтавшие услышать такую подборку, да еще подряд, лишь восторженно вздыхали. Засим довольный юбиляр уступил сцену и гитару друзьям: Андрей Макаревич (разумеется, под крики 'Поворот!' из зала) посвятил Гребенщикову романс, Александр Васильев и Яник Николенко представили свою версию 'Звезды Аделаиды', а Максим Леонидов спел 'Самый быстрый самолет'. Однако самым неожиданным было поздравление Вячеслава Бутусова и Олега Сакмарова: под экстатический рев публики они на мотив 'Старика Козлодоева' исполнили 'Прогулки по воде', причем соло флейты переходило из 'Козлодоева' в классические 'Прогулки' и обратно. Зал рыдал.

Не обошлось и без хулиганств самого Гребенщикова. Воспользовавшись заминкой с бас-гитарой и серьезно извинившись ('Видит Бог, я не хотел'), он под гитарку выдал песенку, которая 'пришла к нам прямиком из больницы Кащенко и создана для того, чтобы быть спетой в Кремле'. Композиция с текстом 'Коммунисты поймали мальчишку/Потащили его в КГБ/Ты откройся, кто дал тебе книжку/Руководство к подпольной борьбе?' в Кремле произвела впечатление, сравнимое с легендарной 'Подмогой'.

Большой заключительный сет состоял из проверенных временем классических хитов вроде 'Русской нирваны', 'Рыбы в океане' или 'Навигатора', относительно новых песен ('Растаманы из глубинки' с инструментальным 'кельтским' соло) и того легендарного, что на мероприятиях такого масштаба быть должно, но до последней секунды страшно поверить, что оно звучит: 'Гарсон ?2', 'Десять стрел', 'Ты дерево', 'Моей звезде не суждено', 'Город золотой'. После такого набора было не совсем понятно, что же пойдет на финал, но и тут Гребенщиков доказал, что умеет праздновать в Кремле - концерт завершился ни больше, ни меньше 'Мамой-анархией'.

Biography:
Owner of a direct, lightly swinging, somewhat plain-wrapped tone that fit right in with the Blue Note label's hard bop ethos of the 1960s, Blue Mitchell tends to be overlooked today perhaps because he never really stood out vividly from the crowd, despite his undeniable talent. After learning the trumpet in high school -- where he got his nickname -- he started touring in the early '50s with the R&B bands of Paul Williams, Earl Bostic and Chuck Willis before returning to Miami and jazz. There, he attracted the attention of Cannonball Adderley, with whom he recorded for Riverside in 1958. That year, he joined the Horace Silver Quintet, with whom he played and recorded until the band's breakup in March 1964, polishing his hard bop skills. During his Silver days, Mitchell worked with tenor Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, drummer Roy Brooks and various pianists as a separate unit and continued recording as a leader for Riverside. When Silver disbanded, Mitchell's spinoff quintet carried on with Al Foster replacing Brooks and a young future star named Chick Corea in the piano chair. This group, with several personnel changes, continued until 1969, recording a string of albums for Blue Note. Probably aware that opportunities for playing straight-ahead jazz were dwindling, Mitchell became a prolific pop and soul sessionman in the late '60s, and he toured with Ray Charles from 1969 to 1971 and blues/rock guitarist John Mayall in 1971-73. Having settled in Los Angeles, he also played big-band dates with Louie Bellson, Bill Holman and Bill Berry; made a number of funk and pop/jazz LPs in the late '70s; served as principal soloist for Tony Bennett and Lena Horne; and kept his hand in hard bop by playing with Harold Land in a quintet. Those of you that are longtime jazz fans, take a few minutes and see how many jazz trumpeters you can name in the next minute. All done? I'm sure many of you remember Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Louis Armstrong, and Buck Clayton, just to name a few. Now, how many of you mentioned the name of Blue Mitchell? This trumpeter's greatest success came during his memorable stay with the Horace Silver Quintet during the early '60s, however his first dates as a leader for Riverside and subsequent work for Blue Note, the topic of discussion here, would mark him as one of the finest players of his generation. Up to now it was easy to get most of Mitchell's work on CD, however it took those astute moguls at Mosaic to assemble for the first time all of the trumpeter's prime Blue Note sides. The Complete Blue Note Blue Mitchell Sessions:1963-1967 is a substantial 4CD/6LP boxed set that presents the original albums Step Lightly, The Thing To Do, Down With It, Bring It Home To Me, Boss Horn, and Heads Up. A few of these albums have been available on CD, yet the pick of the lot is just now being issued on disc for the first time.

Things get underway with the 1963 session Step Lightly which was unissued at the time, only finally surfacing on vinyl in the late '70s. The presence of Joe Henderson and Herbie Hancock make this more than your average affair. The tunes are choice, the arrangements neat and clever, and the playing by all is quite fine. Unfortunately, Mitchell would have to wait until 1964's The Thing To Do to make his Blue Note debut. Of course, this was not an unfavorable thing considering how momentous this occasion would prove to be. Jimmy Heath would supply a few of his choicest tunes and pianist Chick Corea would turn heads with some of his finest early work. In addition, Mitchell's “Fungi Mama” would go on to become a jazz standard. The next two dates, Down With It and Bring It Home To Me would continue in a similar fashion with Heath contributing tunes and tenor saxophonist Junior Cook sharing the front line with Mitchell. In fact, the sonority and articulate phrasing the two achieve is worth giving a special listen to after spinning these sides a few times through. Pianist Harold Mabern is also a special contributor to the later session.

Up next, we get one of Mitchell's finest recorded achievements in the 1966 album Boss Horn. Fronting a seven-piece group with charts arranged by Duke Pearson, Mitchell covers a good deal of ground and makes some highly lyrical and cogent statements of his own. Chick Corea brings in his two finest compositions, “Tones For Joan's Bones” and “Straight Up and Down”, and both receive definitive performances. Mitchell's take on “I Should Care” also proves to be one of his finest solos on record. The closing session, Heads Up, also finds Mitchell in front of a large group with tunes and arrangements by Pearson, Heath, and Melba Liston. Once again, the charts and talented crew make way for a highly memorable album that should have garnered much more attention than it did upon release.

This four-CD limited-edition Mosaic box set collects Mitchell's first six Blue Note dates as a leader: Step Lightly, The Thing to Do, Down With It, Bring It Home to Me, Boss Horn, and Heads Up. Three albums are by his quintet, which included tenor saxophonist Junior Cook and usually the young pianist Chick Corea and was formed shortly after he left Horace Silver, and the three others are with larger groups, two of which have arrangements by Duke Pearson. “Does any other pianist from the past or living exist who soundss better in Schumann? The answer is no. And the reason be that very few pianists of any generation are capable to make the piano sings as Kempff. However he doesn't play Schumann in a romantic mood. Kempff was not only a superb pianist but a deep thinker. He had the gift of looking through the score and produce the tonal effect, the right pulse, the cantabile line with rapture, emotion and expresiveness. His symphonic studies, the Second Sonata or Papillons has no equal. If you request me to name another winner pianists in Schumann I would state for Cortot, Richter and Ives Nat would be those. But Kempff finds the spirit of Schumann as a whole. Nevertheless, in the piano concert or in the chamber music there are others. Ivan Moravec in the piano concert (watch my review) and the piano trios given for Casals in Prades Festival. There's a excellent version of the piano quintet with Serkin Budapest. Nice concept jazz from a mixing of British grooves and South African jazz (and more). A trio of London's session musicians is joined by a guitarist, a vocalist, and a pianist (the late Moses Molelekwa, who died along with his wife/manager in tragic and seemingly unresolved circumstances in 2001) from South Africa, with a handful of other musicians from both continents providing some of the backing tracks. The result is a surprisingly good fusion. The sound is somewhat closer to the British end of things in general, with a sophisticated production and hankering for effects and surprise. Nonetheless, the South African tendencies for tight parallel horns and socially conscious lyrics make themselves known as well. The tone can shift from the use of simple funky horn grooves to more complex marimba melodies to beat-heavy thumps of smooth jazz with electric guitar solos laid out over the top. A very wide range of abilities is displayed, and all at a consistently high quality. This album is unlikely to be everyone's cup of cross-cultural tea, but it's not bad at all. Certainly worth hearing for progressive jazz lovers.
